The discovery of X-ray binaries in the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

چکیده
We report the results of a deep Chandra survey of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find five X-ray sources with LX of at least 6 × 10 ergs/sec with optical counterparts establishing them as members of Sculptor. These X-ray luminosities indicate that these sources are X-ray binaries, as no other known class of Galactic point sources can reach 0.5-8 keV luminosities this high. Finding these systems proves definitively that such objects can exist in an old stellar population without stellar collisions. Three of these objects have highly evolved optical counterparts (giants or horizontal branch stars), as do three other sources whose X-ray luminosities are in the range which includes both quiescent low mass X-ray binaries and the brightest magnetic cataclysmic variables. We predict that large area surveys of the Milky Way should also turn up large numbers of quiescent X-ray binaries.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کامل2 00 4 ‘ Sculptor ’ - ing the Galaxy ? The Chemical Compositions of Red Giants in the Sculptor Dwarf
We have used high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the VLT and UVES to determine abundances of 17 elements in 4 red giants in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our [Fe/H] values range from –2.10 to –0.97, confirming previous findings of a large metallicity spread. We have combined our data with similar data for five Sculptor giants studied recently by Shetrone et al. t...

New observations of the neutral hydrogen (Hi) in and around the line of sight of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal (dSph) are presented. The data obtained with the single-dish Parkes telescope cover a large area of 7 × 7 in the direction of the dwarf, and have resolutions of 15.5 × 1.12 km s. The Australia Telescope Compact Array was used to map a smaller area of 2. 2 × 2. 2 centered on the directi...
متن کاملMulti-element Abundance Measurements from Medium-resolution Spectra. I. the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present measurements of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti abundances for 388 radial velocity member stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), a satellite of the Milky Way. This is the largest sample of individual α element (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) abundance measurements in any single dSph. The measurements are made from Keck/DEIMOS medium-resolution spectra (6400–9000 Å, R ∼ 6500). Based on compari...
متن کاملAssociated with the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
Neutral hydrogen (H I ) has been detected in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Sculptor with the 64 m Parkes single dish and mapped with the Australia Telescope synthesis array. Most of the detected H I is in two clouds ∼ 15 − 20 away from the optical center. The gas is observed at the same systemic velocity than the stars but at ≥ 125 km s away from the Magellanic Stream components in th...
